On Friday, January 13th, 65 upper school students travelled with their advisers Samuel Lepler and Mary Mortlock to the San Ramon Marriott to attend the DECA Northern California conference.
As an international business program for high school and college attendees, DECA provides an avenue for students with interest in business endeavors. After combining two clubs HBC (Harker Business Club) and FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), the new program has grown from 12 members to more than 60.
First time DECA member Bobby Kahlon (11) explained how he “really wanted to have an enlightening experience in the business realm.”
Attending the conference this weekend, all 65 students will participate in either written events, such as business plans and advertising campaigns, or situational events, such as impromptu roleplays. Covering 13 different categories of business, the DECA conference tests and teaches students in all aspects of business.
DECA adviser Lepler described his favorite part of the program as the times when “kids get recognized for what they do […] and when they win and get in front of DECA and the school.”
In previous years, students have qualified to go on to compete in international conferences. Only the top few students in the state of California receive an invite, five of which have been from the Upper School.
