On Wednesday, January 11, eleven Harker seniors were named semifinalists in the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search in a school-wide assembly that featured three employees from Intel, who presented the awards.
The award winners were: Prag Batra, Lucy Cheng, Nicole Dalal, Govinda Dasu, Michelle Deng, Vishesh Gupta, Revanth Kosaraju, Ramya Rangan, Pavitra Rengarajan, Kathryn Siegel, Albert Wu.
With eleven semifinalists, Harker placed 1st in the state of California and 2nd in the nation, behind Stuyvesant High School in New York City with 13 semifinalists. Many of the semifinalists were surprised that their name had been announced.
“I definitely did not expect it at all. I was sitting at the back of the gym, and they mentioned microbiology; my friend was like, ‘Guess who did microbiology?’” Nicole Dalal (12) said.
Nicole’s project was about analyzing gene patterns in the attacking cells of CMV, a virus that is prevalent in 50-80 percent of the population and can cause immune problems.
Nathan Dalal (9), Nicole’s brother, was excited about his sister’s accomplishment.
“I thought she was surprised, but [for me], I thought it was a really good experience,” he said. “Nicole’s always been my role model, and I’m really proud of her.”
