Future Problem Solvers sold mini bundt cakes for the charity organization The Forgotten International everyday after school for their club week this week.

To support the cause, students could either buy one cake for $3 or two cakes for $5. Flavors offered included vanilla, lemon, chocolate, red velvet and confetti. The club raised a total of $1,001.50.

The Forgotten International produced the documentary “Living on a Dollar a Day,” which students watched during an assembly in January. Thomas Nazario, the creator of the film, was also present to answer questions and speak about his humanitarian work.

“After the school assembly where ‘Living on a Dollar a Day’ was shown, most of the FPS officer team wanted to help in some way. By donating to this foundation, we are able to make a difference in the lives of many like those shown in the documentary,” co-president elect of the club Taylor Lam (11) said.

The Harker chapter of the club includes students from fifth to 12th grade, and members strive to find solutions to problems presented in a short story set in a dystopian future through a six-step process. After conducting research and gathering statistics, teams compile a set of viable solutions and write an essay about one of them in more detail. Competition topics vary from infectious diseases to transportation.

Future club events include the state competition from April 20 to 22 at Design 39 in San Diego. Practice for the state competition will be held on March 25 at Blackford.
