On Friday, crowds filled the Blackford gym bleachers as Varsity boy’s basketball faced league rival Menlo School.
Even as the team was just warming up, floods of students, faculty, and parents filled the bleachers in the Blackford Gym to support their boys. Eagle Nation made an appearance with signs and some cheers, ready to encourage the team.
Throughout the entire game, the team kept the score close, not allowing it to differ by more than ten points.
As sweat poured down the players’ faces, the bleachers seemed to get particularly louder, as Menlo students tried to rile up the Eagles.
With a strong first quarter, the team finished ahead 6-5. As the game progressed, they kept a strong fight finishing the first half with Menlo in a small lead 19-16.
Although they put up a strong defense, the boys lost 44-52.
Varsity player Stephen Hughes (12) noted that “the team played well in spurts,” but he believes they will improve and “come out more prepared for the next game at Menlo.”
Taking advantage of the large crowds, the cheer team performed quick cheers at the end of each quarter to encourage the spirited atmosphere in the gymnasium.
Menlo’s “Sea of Gold” was also in attendance, supporting their school. However, Harker’s “Eagle Nation” provided Eagle spirit throughout the four quarters.
Stephen said, “The crowd really gave our team energy throughout the game. We’re really hoping to have a crowd like this more often because it was unbelievable to witness.”
Despite a loss, the boys played hard and continue their league against Priory and Crystal Springs Upland this upcoming week.
