Spanish National Honor Society holds club week
February 2, 2018
Spanish National Honor Society (SNHS) raised money for Sunday Friends by selling tres leches cake, churros and Mexican hot chocolate for their club week this week.
Sunday Friends is a non-profit in San Jose that offers day-long programs on Sundays to low-income families in the area on financial literacy, health and nutrition, violence prevention and basic computer skills. SNHS works with the organization and participates in various activities, including Spanish letter translation, to encourages families to practice writing letters.
“A lot of the disadvantaged minorities in this area are Hispanic, which means that charities such as Sunday Friends serve a disproportionate amount of Spanish speakers,” SNHS president David Wen (12) said. “Sunday Friends in particular offers a lot of programs that help break families out of the cycle poverty through education.”
Additionally, the club focuses on spreading Spanish and Hispanic culture and knowledge among students with like-minded interests in the language.
“Everybody has to write an article per year on a news event or a culture event that happened in the Spanish-speaking world,” Ayush Alag (11), who helped sell food for the club, said. “We also plan for our culture night La Noche Cultural, which will be in a couple months.”
The other language honor societies will be holding their club week next week.
