Power of Words (POW) held a haiku-writing workshop and sold pearl milk tea and popcorn for their club week this week.

A new school organization, POW was founded this year by junior Prameela Kottapalli. The club hosted a haiku-writing workshop in English teacher and POW advisor Michelle Andelman’s room during long lunch today, serving sparkling apple cider, candy and cupcakes to attendees. Students wrote three haikus for the prompts “fall,” “water” and “sun” and submitted them at the end of the workshop. POW will announce the best haikus and award their writers with gift cards and candy during their next club meeting next week.

At Manzanita, members of the organization sold pearl milk tea from Teaspoon for $6 throughout the week and popcorn from Popcornopolis for $5 for two mini bags on Friday. Proceeds from this week’s sales will go to purchasing supplies, such as journals, thesauruses and writing utensils, for workshops held at the Luther Burbank Middle School site of after-school enrichment program coordinator and youth organization Boys & Girls Club of Burbank and Greater East Valley.

“Our goal as a club is to teach creative writing to elementary and middle school kids. We plan to go [to Luther Burbank] later this month and December, and we’re hosting a three-workshop session to help them with their Ford [Driving Dreams Tour] essay contest,” POW member Riya Singh (11) said. “We have our Instagram running right now, and we’re planning to post literary quotes to spread awareness about creative writing among the school community.”

HELM will be holding their club week next week.
