“Immortals” review: 3.5 stars
December 7, 2011
Relativity Media’s newest movie and first big-budget undertaking “Immortals” continues to captivate audiences across the country with bloody feuds and drama-fueled action.
Directed by Tarsem Singh, a young peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill), the son of legendary Zeus, is forced by his fate to lead an army against the invincible and brutal King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke). The ruthless king is on a rampage across Greece to obtain the Epirus Bow that has the ability to destroy humanity itself; in his position, he would liberate the Titans who have the power to massacre the gods on Olympus.
Compelled by revenge for his mother’s death and the wishes of Greece, Theseus agrees to take the seemingly impossible task to defeat Hyperion and his vast army. Aided by several soldiers from his village and a female oracle Phaedra (Freida Pinto), the son of Zeus embarks on a perilous journey to attain the Epirus Bow before his adversary does.
In a story full of action and romance, audiences are bound to be captivated. Action is triple-fold in the form of three epic battles: the gods against the Titans, the Greeks against Hyperion’s army, and the king himself against Theseus.
Special effects transform the movie to an intense plethora of action and awe; however, the development of the plot could have been better, leaving the audience visually sated but longing for more depth. All in all, Immortals is exciting at every turn and has proven to be a box office favorite.
