During long lunch on Wednesday November 16, four flag football teams, created by students, played each other on Rosenthal and Davis field in a friendly competitive community event.
The two games served as the second round of the many games to come in the tournament. Each bracket play will occur on subsequent Wednesdays. The first round occurred on October 19; however, due to the ongoing football season, there was a hiatus in the competition that spanned for a month.
Though initially eleven teams were signed up to compete, four teams dropped out, leaving only seven standing teams. However, Bobby Kahlon (11) was still impressed by the amount of people that came out to play.
“The amount of participation was completely mind blowing to the amount I anticipated,” he said.
The tournament was established by Kevin Cali (11) to provide the opportunity for not only athletes, but also anyone who was interested in playing to come out and compete in an informal game of flag football.
“I love to watch football so why not play it?” said Lauren Cali (10).
Spectator Rohith Kudititpudi (9) also supports this initiative to involve the community in athletics.
“[Flag football] allows people to play who don’t normally have the opportunity to play sports or aren’t good enough,” Rohith said. “They just come together and compete for fun.”
Each team was required to enter seven players, including at least two females.
“I love that they are incorporating [the rule about girls] because it forces people to branch out and not stick to the stereotypical football norms,” said Sonya Chalaka (12).
Results of each game will be sent out via email to all students.
