Silicon Valley startup Trio released an app for iOS devices yesterday that gives users tools to create mashup clips of videos, photos, animated GIFs, and music from Vine, Instagram, and Giphy.

Media mashup creator mixed with social networking, Trio debuted this Wednesday on the iTunes Store for iOS devices.

Made by the creators of Meograph, Trio allows its users to mix clips of videos, pictures and music and share them with friends on social media sites.

In an email interview with BostInno, CEO and co-founder of Trio Misha Leybovich said that Trio allows anybody to make trending videos.

“Trio makes it easy to remix other people’s (friends, celebs, brands) assets […] into awesome mashups, putting the world of popular media at your fingertips,” he said. “This lets you be funny and creative anytime, so you can look cool even if you’re not always doing cool activities.”

Trio allows users to take pictures, videos, and animated GIFs from social media sites like Vine, Instagram, and Giphy to share mashed-up videos with friends.

Currently, Trio supports adding image or video content from Vine, Instagram and Giphy. The app also supports adding soundtracks from any music playlist.

Trio also has a social media aspect of its app, which allows its users to create and compete on challenges related to memes or inside jokes.

After making a short clip or a movie using other people’s content, users can add audio and text captions before publishing.

Some students prefer to stick to reading other people’s posts on more popular, mainstream social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

“I use Facebook for chatting with friends, and also Facebook is a news source for me. I also use Twitter to read sports news,” Rohan Desikan (11) said.

Samyukta Yagati (12) agreed with Rohan, adding that she doesn’t use social media to post content of her own.

“[I use] Facebook for keeping in touch with people and Tumblr and various blogs for entertainment,” she said. “And I almost never publish.”

Other students use social media for reasons different from staying in contact with friends and from entertainment.

“I’m on Tumblr all the time and while I used to post pictures a lot, I don’t really do that anymore,” Rachel Renteria (11) said. “Tumblr is sort of my outlet, in that I can be scrolling for a while and see something that makes me laugh when I’m feeling horrible.”

Namitha Vellian (11) uses different social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr for a variety of different purposes, sometimes posting original content.

“I rarely post any statuses on Facebook, I just upload pictures occasionally,” she said. “I use Instagram for more fun posts because I can block people that I don’t want to see my stuff and it’s more of a personal account. And lastly, I use Tumblr rarely to just look at funny stuff but I don’t really reblog anything.”
