Sons of Sylvia Review: Rockin’ with Country Pops
January 5, 2011
Surprisingly unlike the typical rock band, Sons of Sylvia’s distinctive sounds offer a mix of beats that I can listen to while driving in the car, studying at my desk, or getting ready in the morning.
The trio of brothers, Adam Clark, Ashley Clark, and Austin Clark, play with a variety of instruments throughout their ten songs helping create a smooth pop album with touches of country and rock.
The Sons of Sylvia released their debut album Revelation on April 27 with Interscope Records. They sang “What Can I Say” together with Carrie Underwood in her third album and joined her on her tour, opening for her at each site. They performed their first single, “Love Left to Lose”, on American Idol in April, gaining popularity and even hitting number two on the iTunes pop albums one week.
Revelation highlights Ashley’s wide vocal range, especially in “Song of Solomon.” Although I am typically not a fan of country music, the hybrid of slow rock has a slower suave appeal, creating a larger audience for their music. There is an uplifting and moving tone to their songs –I can’t help but do a slow head bob while listening.
The order could afford to be different though; “John Wayne” seemed to be an obscure choice to introduce the brothers. The heavy beat of “War Within” left me in slight confusion after the in the previous songs. For those rock fanatics, “War Within” may resonate as the heavier blend of sounds fuse with the lyrics.
Sons of Sylvia is a refreshing blend of everything. As for a preview into the Clark family, start with “I’ll Know You”, and you’ll get to know Sons of Sylvia well in those four minutes and twelve seconds.
