New York: Journalism teacher honored at Columbia convention

Director of Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Edmund J. Sullivan and CSPA Past President Mary Kay Downes award Upper School Director of Journalism Ellen Austin a Gold Key award for excellence in journalism at the CSPA convention at Columbia University on Friday, March 21.
Upper School Director of Journalism Ellen Austin received a Gold Key award for excellence in journalism at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) convention at Columbia University on Friday, March 21.
The tradition of Gold Key awards originated in 1929 based on an idea by Joseph M. Murphy, CSPA’s founding director. According to the CSPA website, Gold Keys recognize “outstanding devotion to the cause of the school press” and “service above and beyond the call of delegated duty,” among other noble qualities.
Austin was one of the five individuals who received the prestigious honor this year. The others include Beth Shull from Pulaski Academy, Gail Snyder from South River High School, Jim Streisel from Carmel High School, and Chris Waugaman from Prince George High School.
“Honored” at receiving the award, Austin wrote about her own experiences as a teacher and advisor in the booklet given out at convent
The awards were presented at a gathering in Columbia’s Low Memorial Library Rotunda after the final workshop session at the CSPA convention. Mary Kay Downes, Past President at Columbia Scholastic Press Advisers Association (CSPAA), specifically announced each Gold Key award.
