On Tuesday, December 7, 2010, a group of delegates from the Chaoyang District of Beijing, China visited the Upper School campus among other California locales to learn about the school’s extracurricular and community service activities.
Arranged by Executive Director of Advancement Joe Rosenthal, their visit here consisted of a campus tour and a presentation detailing the extracurricular activities available at the Upper School.
“The government sent the delegation to…find out how kids can be so happy in a very rigorous, academic school,” he said. They were here to identify co-curricular programs that foster “character building” and “kindness and respect” in a community and learn how to incorporate them into their own schools.
The delegates, many coming from administrative offices and government bureaus, face challenges presented by a large population coupled with rapidly growing foreign businesses. In addition to attending a two-week training session at San Francisco State University, the delegates also visited “enterprises, schools, and nonprofit organizations” to learn about “community service, social work, character,” said Lucy Li, a translator and parent. Particularly interested in the Upper School’s community service program, the delegates hoped to promote the efforts of their districts’ populations to better serve the community.
The guests learned about the values that our school infuses into its education system to nurture well-rounded students. Upper School Head Samuel “Butch” Keller explained how the administration is trying to make the school a more comfortable environment for students to thrive in. They were introduced to the performing arts programs and numerous co-curricular activities that students participated in.
Lastly, the delegates learned about the Harker English Language Institute, a summer program designed to help foreign students improve their English proficiency and prepare applications for schools in the US. They were encouraged to spread the word to friends interested in improving their English language skills.
