Demi Review – 4/5 stars

Demi Review - 4/5 stars

Demi Lovato’s new album, Demi, released May 14th , contains many fast-paced songs, which are fun and perfect for the start of the summer.

With this album, I was expecting her to move into a more alternative direction, rather than to remain as a pop princess. Though the album was not what I was anticipating, I was still pleased.

The album in its entirety contains 13 songs, including her single “Heart Attack,” and is currently fourth on the iTunes top 10.

On the album is an appearance from Cher Lloyd, who is a British sensation off the One Direction season of The X Factor. The two come together in a fun, upbeat song titled “Really Don’t Care.” In this track they have a musical chemistry that works well for the style of the album.

Although the majority of the songs on her album are upbeat and completely lack meaning, there are a few slower songs that have more of a message like “Nightingale,” “In Case,” “Shouldn’t Come Back,” and “Warrior.” Unfortunately, the songs’ meanings are about love rather than other personal problems she has publicly expressed, which disappointed me.

Demi Lovato’s image over the past few years has changed as she has expressed her struggle through her self-image issues she has been fighting for years and migrated towards an edgier “look.”

Since Demi promotes an anti-self-harm campaign, I was expecting her to reflect that even more through her music. Although more time has passed since she has overcome her troubles, she still advocates about it.

Even though Demi is not a comeback album, it is her first record since September 2011 when she released Unbroken, the first album she after she left rehabilitation.
