After nearly four months, seniors reconvened with their college counselors today for the final time to discuss action items for the last months of the school year.
Counselors discussed waitlist offers, communication with colleges, and the appeals process. According to counselor Kevin Lum Lung, the meeting acted as a way for the counselors to disseminate important information quickly.
“They gave some really good tips and reminders such as keeping our grades up, reading every single email from colleges, and thanking our teachers,” Lori Berenberg (12) said.
Lori and other students left their respective college counseling classes early because they had been admitted under Early Decision plans, which required that students attend the university or college in the fall. These students did not have to listen to the waitlist and appeals logistics that applied to their classmates.
While counselors discussed details of the upcoming spring, they also elaborated on what happens after students submit enrollment deposits at universities. Some seniors were especially excited for the post-enrollment period.
“It made me very excited hearing about orientation and all of the next steps that are associated with entering college in the fall,” Joseph Wang (12) said.
As institutions of higher education release decisions, seniors are required to inform their counselors of both good and bad news. While rejections and waitlist offers may disappoint students, college counselors hope that the seniors remain optimistic for the future.
“I just hope that everybody focuses on the opportunities that they do have rather than the ones that they don’t have,” Lum Lung said.
Students must submit an enrollment deposit to a college by May 1.
