This Friday, eight seniors will travel to the middle school campus to conduct an assembly on bullying.
Seniors Simar Mangat, Michael Amick, Maverick McNealy, Eric Swenson, Sam Hoffman, Jenny Chen, Tara Rezvani, and Nikhil Panu will host the assembly at the beginning of the school day.
“I think that we all have shared different experiences from our middle school and it’s great to give back to the community,” Jenny said.
Over the past few weeks, the students along with guidance counselors, Chris Colletti, Hui Hui Chang, Lori Kohan, and Gary Mallare, and administrators have been meeting to organize the event. The seniors are given the task of explaining bullying and giving advice in a way that the middle school students would understand.
“I think it’s really good and I’m really proud of [them] for taking the initiative to spend this much time and energy towards this project. I think middle schoolers would benefit from their peers more so than any other adult,” Chang said.
At the assembly, the seniors plan on addressing major issues such as name-calling, physical bullying, and cyber bullying. The assembly was initiated by Simar, who has a sister, Sameep, in the middle school.
“[Each] senior will provide a unique perspective on the problem based on personal experience to increase awareness and hopefully change the mentality of the middle school,” Simar said.
The seniors hope that the middle school students will each take away from a positive message from the assembly, so that they are better equipped to cope with and ultimately prevent bullying from taking place.
