Over the weekend, four chaperones and 77 Harker Business Club (HBC) members attended the Silicon Valley Career Development Conference in downtown San Jose. Fifty students were recognized, while the overall group took home 14 trophies.
For three days, students participated in a variety of events with nine other school groups. After teams prepared for their specific competitions, roleplays (impromptu oral presentations and subsequent exams) or written contests (oral presentations and 5-30 page written plans), they showcased their cases to a board of judges.
During the three-hour awards ceremony that took place Sunday morning, trophies and medals were handed to winning teams.
Throughout the trip, DECA members still had time to relax and interact with members from other schools. Some members attended an evening DECA dance, while others took time to roam around the surrounding area.
“Some people went shopping while me and some friends actually went ice skating at a nearby rink,” Albert Chen (12) said.
Furthermore, several students enjoyed staying in the hotel and spending time in each other’s rooms.
“After hard work and lots of preparation, my friends hung out, watched TV, and played games; even as a first timer, I had a great experience,” Samir Chaudhry (11) said.
After participating in the first of many Silicon Valley conferences, officers and members alike are excited about the future of DECA at school.
“I think that Harker was really successful, especially since a lot of our chapter is made up of freshmen and sophomores. We’re looking forward to doing even better at states!” DECA president Tiphaine Delepine (12) said.
Two DECA tourneys will be held in the upcoming months: states at Santa Clara in March and Internationals at Anaheim in April.
