Construction workers began building a wheelchair ramp in front of the nurse’s office on the morning of August 30. Renovation is expected to be completed by September 4.

One of the many renovations at the Upper School campus this year, the construction of a wheelchair ramp in front of the nurse’s office began the morning of August 30.

Due to the expansion of the Journalism room in Manzanita Hall, the hallway leading from the Edge to the nurse’s office is no longer accessible. As a result, wheelchair users would have to take a longer detour through the Shed.

“You [would] have [had] to go all the way around the building in the back through several doors,” Director of Nursing Debra Nott said. “That’s not really a great option to [people] that are injured or sick enough that they have to be wheelchaired.”

During construction, students can access the nurse’s office through the Shed entrance, which is the path people in wheelchairs would have had to use without the addition of the ramp.

Renu Singh (11), who visited the nurse while construction was proceeding, had a hard time finding her way through this roundabout back entrance.

“It was really confusing and when I finally found my way I ended up being late to [my next class],” she said.

With the new ramp, however, affected individuals will be able to have more efficient and direct access to the nurse’s office.

Although the project was planned for the summer, it was put off until the school year. The construction team will be working from seven in the morning and over Labor Day Weekend to reduce any disruptions during classes. Construction is currently expected to be completed by Tuesday, September 4.
