Sather Tower is a notable attribute of University of California, Berkeley’s campus. UC Berkeley will be one of the universities that has tuition hikes for the next five years.

Janet Napolitano, University of California president, and the board of regents approved a series of yearly tuition hikes at the University of California in an effort to accept more students and continue maintaining its standard of learning.

Voters and state lawmakers are strongly opposed to the tuition increases that are projected to raise tuition about 28 percent in the next five years. These increases are estimated to bring the current tuition of $12,192 to  $15,563 in the 2019-2020 school year. Raising this tuition will break the deal made with Governor Jerry Brown to freeze tuition in exchange for four years of general funding increases. Currently, Brown is currently calling for the UC system to use its resources more efficiently, while Napolitano is continuing to ask for more state funding.

“I guess it’s difficult, especially for parents, that there is a tuition increase,” Leeza Kuo (12) said. “But with more money comes better quality so hopefully they will be able to enhance student’s education or student life.”
