SNHS inducted fifteen new members today during its luncheon today. Unlike past years, the society held the event on campus.
The Spanish National Honor Society (SNHS) welcomed its new members during a luncheon held in the Nichols Rotunda today.
Because the induction ceremony was held at school this year, students could spend more time eating and bonding at the event.
“When we have been rushed in the past, we can’t really enjoy the actual ceremony,” Abel Olivas, Upper School Language Department Chair, said. “It gave me a chance to inspire the kids to make connections between the name of our chapter, Isabel Allende, and her message about the power of language.”
In past years, SNHS members traveled to a Mexican restaurant for the induction ceremony. However, the society held the ceremony on campus this year to eliminate problems associated with the travel.
“Normally, we have the induction at a restaurant, but this year we decided to have it at school because we always got back late from the restaurant and missed eighth period,” SNHS President Sachin Peddada (12) said.
At the ceremony, SNHS inducted 15 Upper School students by giving them official certificates of their membership in the society. Members enjoyed a lunch buffet with Spanish music. In addition, old and new members pledged to dedicate themselves to the study of the Spanish language.
Melinda Wisdom (10), a new SNHS member, described how the pledge relates to the reason she joined the society.
“I hope the Spanish language is always a part of my life because I’ll be able to communicate with so many more people,” Melinda said.
To be invited into the society, a student must be in an AP or Honors Spanish class and have an A- in the semester before the induction. As a member of SNHS, the student is required to write one article for the society’s biannual newsletter, “Portico,” and attend the Spanish Cultural Night held in the spring.
This luncheon was the last SNHS event of the year and presidential elections for the society will be held in May.
