A healthier Pi pie
If you wish to celebrate Pi day with a Pi-themed pie, look no further. The following recipe attempts to reduce the amount of butter and sugar found in traditional pies.
Pie is a delicious staple dessert that is suitable for numerous occasions. If in need of a healthy yet fulfilling pie perfect for Pi day, look no further.
Ingredients:
1 cup of light brown sugar
¼ cup of white sugar
3 eggs
1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon of milk
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 cup of chopped pecans
Enough premade crust dough for a nine-inch pan and a π symbol (or from scratch if you prefer)
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. In a large bowl, beat the eggs until they appear foamy. Set aside a small amount to brush the pi symbol with if you want. It will give it the glossy, golden sheen you commonly see. Once complete, add the brown and white sugars and flour to the beaten eggs and mix thoroughly.
3. Toss in the milk, vanilla and pecans last.
4. Take the nine-inch pie pan and lay the unbaked pie crust dough on it. Some premade crusts even come with the pan.
5. Pour the previously made mixture onto the pie crust.
6. With your extra crust, carve out the pi symbol and place it on the pie. Grab the previously set aside eggs and add a small amount of water to it. Use a basting brush to spread the egg wash on the pi (optional). Sprinkle some more crushed pecans on top for decoration if you desire.
7. Bake the pie for 10 minutes, lower the temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and then bake for 30 to 40 more minutes until crust is golden brown.
This healthy pecan pi pie does not consist of the large amount of corn syrup and butter found in standard pies, yet it still retains a sweet flavor.
