Sophomores Anuva Mittal and May Gao read an article in Wingspan. The first issue of the Upper School’s new long-form magazine released today.

Wingspan, the Upper School’s fourth publication and first long-form magazine, released its first issue today, along with the January issue of the Winged Post.

This fourth publication is an integration of the three other publications, Aquila, Talon and Winged Post. Writers from each publication collaborated to write these articles, which range from 1,000 to 5,000 words and took months to gather information and write. Copies of Wingspan can be found along with issue four of the Winged Post in distribution boxes in front of Dobbins, Shah, Nichols and the journalism room.

Sindhu Ravuri (12), the editor-in-chief of the magazine, and Shay Lari-hosain (11), the chief design editor, have been working on Wingspan since March of the last school year.

“It has been a long and tough process. We really started from absolutely nothing,” Shay said. “This is a design project of such a large scale, so it’s really my first time.”

Priscilla Pan (12), the features editor of the Winged Post, wrote an article in Wingspan about agriculture in the Bay Area.

“It was a lot of outside of school sources as well as really in-depth 30-minute conversations on the phone and through email and in person,” Priscilla said. “I think through that, we were able to get a much more in-depth coverage of the Bay Area.”

Readers commented on the introduction of Wingspan.

“I think the magazine offers a new level of in depth reporting that Harker journalism didn’t have before, and the spreads and pieces are beautifully designed and written,” Sanjana Marce (10) said.

World history teacher Roxana Pianko described on the benefits of the new magazine.
“It’s going to give a lot of students the opportunity to be able to express themselves in ways that maybe they aren’t able to, especially because they get to write longer pieces, so it gives them the opportunity to spend a little more time researching and to create something that they are proud of,” she said.

The next issue of Wingspan will release on March 31.
