Registration for the AMC continues until tomorrow
Registration at the Upper School for the annual American Mathematics Competition (AMC) examinations continues until tomorrow, Jan. 9.
Registration has been available since the winter break, as mathematics department chair Anthony Silk sent an email to students over the break with a link to the registration form. Silk also made an announcement at the school meeting this week.
There will be two exams, the AMC 10 and AMC 12. The AMC 12 will be open to all grade levels, while ninth and tenth graders have the option of taking the AMC 10 as well.
“It’s easier, and I still can take the 10,” Randy Zhao (9), who is taking the AMC 10, said.
According to the MAA’s website, high scores on the AMC may entitle students to take the MAA’s American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). 39 Upper School students earned such scores last year.
However, participation in the exam is not mandatory for students who are not seeking to qualify for the AIME.
“I never really thought about taking the AMC,” Aumesh Misra (11) said. “I’m not really that passionate [about] the competitions.”
The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) hosts the AMC. According to the MAA’s website, both exams contain 25 questions and allow for one hour and 15 minutes to complete the exam.
The school will hold the exams on Feb. 3. Registration is available at http://goo.gl/forms/yhrZqxd6oo. Posters around campus also contain QR codes with the link to the registration form.
