New ASB and class councils assemble for their first meeting
The new ASB and class councils convened at their first meeting yesterday, May 28, in the faculty dining room to discuss plans for the upcoming school year.
Rising junior class Treasurer Ankur Karwal (10) is enthusiastic about working with the council next year.
“The council is definitely a great team. With the addition of new members and a very capable ASB, there’s a lot of energy and excitement as we start our first project, which is the matriculation skit,” he said.
The meeting was held primarily to welcome new members to the council, as well as well as to brainstorm ideas for the annual Matriculation skit. The skit aims to teach the incoming freshman class about various facets of the Upper School community such as the honor code, dress code, and importance of community and friendship throughout high school. Among the themes suggested for the skit were popular smartphone apps, YouTube stars, and pop culture references. According to the ASB council, the theme cannot be disclosed at this time but will be revealed during Matriculation.
Rising senior class Treasurer Nikhil Reddy (11) expressed sentiments of satisfaction about the skit, believing that the selected theme will allow the new council to “start off the year on a refreshing note where everyone knows what we’re talking about.”
Each council was assigned to write one scene for the skit, and rehearsals will begin in late August, prior to Matriculation.
In addition to discussing the skit, ASB officers further clarified the duties of several council positions. Treasurers will be in charge of collecting feedback from their respective classes about the different lunch options offered.
“Pretty much we’re creating some sort of survey or feedback system so that we have the popular foods more often and less days with the ‘bad’ lunches,” ASB Treasurer David Lin (11) said.
Vice Presidents will take a more active role in the club renewal and check up program.
“The role of [vice president] this year will probably become bigger due to some projects that we’re currently in the process of creating,” Jessica Chang (11), ASB Vice President, said.
The council will reconvene during the summer to rehearse the Matriculation skit.
