Brooklyn Nine-Nine — 4/5 stars
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” a new comedy series that began in September of 2013 on Fox Network, follows the lives of six detectives in the 99th Precinct of the New York City Police Department in Brooklyn.
In the beginning of the series, Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and his partner Detective Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) place a bet. If Peralta wins the bet by solving the most cases, he gets to take Santiago out on the worst date ever. On the other hand, if Santiago wins the bet, she gets Peralta’s car. In addition to this bet, the 99th Precinct gets a new captain: Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher). Unlike the previous captain, who was carefree and allowed the childish Peralta to do anything he wanted, Captain Holt ends up being strict and harsh.
Along with Samberg, Fumero, and Braugher, the show stars Stephanie Beatriz, who plays the role of Detective Rosa Diaz; Terry Crews, who plays Detective Sergeant Terence Jeffords; Joe Lo Truglio, who plays the role of Detective Charles Boyle; and Chelsea Peretti, who stars as Gine Linetti.
The show is mainly about the lives of the detectives and what they do in their free time, rather than the cases they are assigned to. Although this adds to the comedy of the show, I think the detectives can focus more on the actual cases, considering it is a crime show. Also, in the beginning of the first season, the jokes were funny, but as the show progressed, they became worse, making it less entertaining.
On the other hand, the acting is well executed. Each character has a certain personality and trait, both of which the actors represent well. Even though “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has some faults, it is still a great show to watch to pass time.
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” currently has a score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 70% on Metacritic. This show has been nominated for Golden Globes, NAACP Image Awards, People’s Choice Awards, and Satellite Awards. Among those, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has won two Golden Globe Awards for best television series and best actor, for Andy Samberg.
The season finale is on Tuesday, March 25, and as of March 7, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has been renewed for a second season.
