Attempted hijacking of Turkish flight to Sochi foiled
An attempted hijacking of a Turkish flight to Sochi occurred today. This is just after the ban of all liquids on flights to Russia was enforced.
There was an attempted hijacking today by a passenger aboard a Pegasus Airlines flight en route to Istanbul from Kharkov, Ukraine.
According to the New York Times, the alleged passenger attempted to divert the flight with 100 passengers aboard to Sochi by threatening that a bomb was planted in the cargo hold of the Boeing 737-800.
The crew told the passenger that the plane’s course had in fact been diverted to Sochi by dimming the cabin lights.
The attempted hijacking occurred just after the Department of Homeland Security enforced a ban on all liquids and aerosols such as toothpaste in carry-on luggage on flights to Russia.
The New York Times reported the 110-passenger flight landed safely at its original destination at Sahiba Gokcen International Airport in Istanbul. The authorities searched the plane but have yet to disclose whether an explosive was indeed present.
Today’s attempted hijacking highlighted security issues that have been brewing surrounding the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.
