Social media in Sochi
Social media has dominated the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
In attempts to regulate media, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has set guidelines on the official website of the Olympics Movement, applying to all participants in the Olympic Games.
American athletes led a revolt against the IOC, as athletes are not allowed to to use social media to promote their sponsors. They risked potential disqualification, but the IOC has not yet responded to the situation.
Folks in Sochi have used social media to expose the city’s unpreparedness and contentious stance for the global event. Complaints have included poor hotel conditions and Russia’s controversial anti-gay law.
Throughout the course of the Olympics, social media will continue its leading role in reporting the affairs in Sochi.
