Following a 1-4 defeat to Sacred Heart Prep on Wednesday, the Varsity boys’ soccer team beat King’s Academy 4-1 yesterday, earning its fourth win of the season.

King’s Academy scored the first goal while the Eagles’ sophomore Oisin Coveney scored the second, ending the first half tied 1-1. Within a span of a few minutes, the Eagles quickly turned the game in their favor during the second half, with Oisin scoring the next goal and sophomore Omar Hamade scoring the final two goals.

Because the Knights played more aggressively in the first half of the game, senior Kevin Moss was put in at defense to help shut down the opposition, switching with Oisin to allow the latter to play midfield.

“In the first half, we were a lot less confident, and in the second half, we just communicated a lot better and came out with a hungry mentality, and everyone played strong and hard,” Kevin said. “Oisin and I switched because he’s better at serving balls from midfield and it opened the field up for us.”

Omar was injured by King’s Academy’s goalie shortly before halftime, resulting in bloody, scraped knees and his temporary removal from the game. Despite his injury, Omar decided to quickly return to the field.

“We always want to make sure that we have that will to want to play and will to win, and I’m glad that he was able to find his way back on the field,” head coach Shaun Tsakiris said. “That kind of tells a lot about our group and tells a lot about him, specifically where he just wants to be on the field, which is helpful.”

Omar accredits his determination to his coaches who inspired him.

“Yesterday, we had a classroom session [in which] Coach told us it’s not how well we play but how [badly] we want it,” Omar said, commenting on his return to the game. “We really [needed] to win, so I needed to come back to help the team.”

The team’s next home game will be on Thursday, Jan. 16 against Crystal Springs Uplands on Davis Field.
