Talk Around Campus: Fall Break
Thanksgiving Break means different things to different people: family dinners, movie nights, outdoor projects and Costco-sourced chickens. With the holiday finally here, here’s a look at what students and teachers are most excited for this week.
What are you most excited to do over Fall Break?

Hanwen Cui (10): Over Thanksgiving break, I will be working on my eagle service project for Boy Scouts where I’ll be building a couple of outdoor kiosks for a nearby native garden in a park. And so I’m looking forward to doing that and working with some of my friends on it as well.

Abigail Liu (10): Probably just getting a break from schoolwork and being able to hang out with my friends and do movie nights and stuff like that

Bradley Stoll, Mathematics Teacher: Just relax, get some recommendations down that I have been putting off, and I have to get my bike fixed. It needs new pedals so I should probably get that taken care of if I want to go biking.

Eddie Zhang (12): I’m really excited to hang out with my brother and just have some fun and relax over a couple of days.

What are you planning to eat for Thanksgiving?

Abigail: Our family doesn’t really do traditional thanksgiving dinner because none of us really like turkey or any of the other sides, so instead we usually get a turkey shaped ice cream cake and we just alternate the flavors each year.

Hanwen: Normally my family doesn’t eat anything out of the ordinary for Thanksgiving, but this year, I’m gonna be cooking. I want to make a lot of the dishes that I like, so I’m gonna make my own spaghetti, and I’m going to fry salmon.

Stoll: I am making a mushroom risotto. I went up and I bought some chanterelle mushrooms at Costco. So yeah, I’m gonna cut them up and the risotto is super good.
So I’m gonna bring that over and that’ll be pretty much my dinner.

Where are you planning to go over the break?

Abigail: I think I’ll probably just be visiting my friends in their houses and hanging out there.

Stoll: If the weather’s nice, maybe make a trip to some state parks I’ve been reading about and check up north a little bit.

What are you most grateful for this year?

Abigail: I’m really thankful for my family for always supporting me and giving me the opportunities that I have, and I’m also thankful for my friends because they make things fun.

Hanwen: This year, I’m really thankful for my friends, because I felt this year more than the rest, I’ve spent a lot more time with them, and because they make me happy and I just had so much fun this year with them.

Stoll: Just the fact that ur family has been going through some things, but I just realized that just the fact that we always have something to fall back on. I’m just thankful I’m in such a good position in my life and able to complain about things that don’t make any difference at all to most people. And that’s something that’s a privilege. Oh, we can complain about stupid things, all of us here, and when I look at them, it’s like, oh, those really don’t really matter much.

Eddie: I’m thankful for my family and friends, obviously, but I’m also thankful for the opportunity to study here at Harker, because all the teachers are great.
