Varsity girls and boys golf celebrated their senior night at Los Lagos Golf Course on May 1.

The teams played a friendly nine-hole round against each other, splitting up into groups of four across the course. Friends, family and teammates gathered near the ninth hole with handmade posters and gifts to cheer on the seniors at their last hole. Head coach Ie-Chen Cheng reflected on the commitment that the graduating seniors have shown throughout their time on the team in a ceremony after the match.

“The most important thing is time, and it’s the greatest gift anyone can give you,” Cheng said. “We spend a lot of time on the course and I always say it’s really hard to be a Harker student because of all their commitments. However, something special about this class is that they have been league champions all four years — that’s never been achieved in Harker history.”

After all the golfers completed the course, supporters moved to an open patio off the green, where Ie-Chen Cheng delivered a personalized speech to each senior: Demitri Ajlouny, Roshan Amurthur, Lucas Chen, Jaden Fu, Alan Gao, Kimaya Mehta, Ashley Mo, S Wang, Vivek Yella and Leana Zhou. She then opened the floor to other teammates and parents who shared their favorite memories with the graduating class.

“I’m really going to miss the seniors,” sophomore varsity girls golf teammate Mehr Paul said. “Over the past two years on the team, I have grown so close to them. They’ve had such a big impact on me and my mindset of playing golf — it won’t be the same without them next season.”

Following the speeches, the girls golf team gifted the seniors with personalized baskets. They indulged in a dinner of Wingstop and chicken wraps before taking photos with family and friends to end the ceremony.

Senior Ashley Mo has played on the team all four years of high school and emphasized the community that golf helped foster.

“Senior night was definitely a great culmination of my four years,” Ashley said. “I was pretty emotional just because I’ve played for so long, and I’ve formed great relationships with my teammates. Seeing everyone come together, play one last match and then everyone by my side was really special. My dad’s speech was one of the most touching things I’ve ever experienced.”

Four-year high school golf player and captain of the boys’ golf team senior Jaden Fu appreciated the opportunity to reflect on his time in Harker golf and play a last game with his teammates.

“I had a lot of fun playing [golf] against the girls’ team with my friends supporting me,” Jaden said. “The speeches from the other golf team members and our coach helped me reflect on my golf journey at Harker. I’ve made so many lasting memories and friends thanks to golf in high school.”

The boys golf team finished their season with an undefeated league record of 12-0 and a league championship title, while the girls golf team ended their fall season 16-0, winning its eighth consecutive league championship.
