Fall Spirit Week Day 1: Class themes, trivia game launch “Into the Harker-verse”

Fall Spirit Week kicked off with class theme dress-ups and an “Are You Smarter than a Teacher?” game outside Manzanita Hall today.
Each grade wore outfits matching their own world from the overarching theme of “Into the Harkerverse”, with seniors as magic, juniors as zombie apocalypse, sophomores as outer space and frosh as underwater.
SAB member and HSLT community events secretary Megha Unny (11) helped plan the dress-up themes and games for the week and believes that the dress-ups encourage class bonding.
“Dressing up is my favorite part of spirit because it’s one of the few things that everybody can do,” Megha said. “Everybody contributes to the points, and it makes me happy because we’re all working together.”

Seniors entered campus with magical wands and Harry Potter-themed attire like round glasses, robes and striped ties. Juniors arrived with ripped, bloody class shirts and scars drawn in face paint. Sophomores decorated their clothes with paper stars, while frosh donned sea animal onesies and adorned their outfits with shells and pearls.
HSLT held a trivia game, “Are You Smarter than a Teacher?”, where students raced to answer fifty trivia questions, competing against Director of Alumni Relations Caren Furtado. Students were asked questions like “Who built the pyramids in Giza?” and “What is the tallest land animal?”
“I like that [the game] was very low-key and no pressure in any shape and form,” Furtado said. “It was nice, because some things I knew, some things the students knew. HSLT really does make an effort and I was happy participating. We were being silly the whole time.”

Flight crew member Anya Lu (10), who volunteered to lead the game, noticed that it did not recieve as much participation compared to past games but recognizes that its reception is important feedback for future spirit events.
“It gives us a better idea of what people like and what they’re willing to do during their lunchtime next time,” Anya said. “It’s conducive to seeing what spirit actually is: it’s not just all fun stuff. There’s a lot of planning that goes into it, and sometimes you fail, and sometimes you don’t.”
Fall spirit week will continue tomorrow, where grades will dress up in their class colors.
