Leaders of the pack

Being a team captain means more than bearing an armband—it requires leadership, drive, and a willingness to pick up the slack. Captains cheer up teammates during pre-game preparations but also break down strategies in the team room. They need to be ready to step up at any given notice. They’re the ones directing traffic, calling out plays and making sure everyone knows their role. In volatile situations, captains are the glue that unites the team, keeping teammates focused and adjusting strategies.

But leadership isn’t just limited to the court, it also includes staying after practice to help the new teammate master a move, lifting spirits after a tough game and holding everyone accountable during conditioning. Outside of refining skills in the sport, captains bring the team close together, scheduling team lunches and hosting gatherings for the athletes to bond, unwind and build camaraderie. They encourage open communication, keeping the team connected and focusing on both individual and collective growth. Through their leadership, captains set the tone for the team’s culture, striving for excellence during the season.
