2015 NFL Draft: Meet the San Francisco 49ers’ top three picks

After ending the 2014-2015 season with an 8-8 record and losing several valuable players during offseason, the San Francisco 49ers received 10 new players at the 2015 NFL Draft.

The team’s new additions include Arik Armstead, Jaquiski Tartt, Eli Harold, Blake Bell, Mike Davis, DeAndre Smelter, Bradley Pinion, Ian Silberman, Trenton Brown and Rory Anderson.

21-year-old Arik Armstead, a California native, played both basketball and football at Pleasant Grove High School in Sacramento county. He had 126 tackles and 7.5 sacks during his high school football career and was ranked as the sixth best defensive lineman of his class. He was also selected by Rivals.com as a four-star recruit.

Before playing collegiate football, Armstead was chosen to be a part of the U.S. Army All-American game and the 2012 Parade All-America team.

His older brother also played football at USC and then in the Canadian Football League. Originally also a USC football commit, he transferred to the University of Oregon in the spring of his freshman year. He played 12 games with a total of 26 tackles during his freshman football season at USC and “redshirted” the basketball season the same year at Oregon. As a sophomore in 2013, Armstead began playing on the basketball team but decided to focus his attention on football, recording 15 tackles and one sack that season.

As a junior at the College Football Playoff National Championship, he amassed a personal best nine tackles and one fumble in his team’s loss to Ohio State. After his season last fall, he committed to the 2015 NFL Draft and was selected as a first round, 17th pick by the 49ers, one of the two teams situated closest to his hometown.

Born on Feb. 18, 1992 in Mobile, Alabama, 23-year-old Tartt only began playing football his senior year at Davidson High School in Mobile, Alabama, where he started as a safety. He played a mere season before committing to Samford University’s football program.

Interestingly, throughout his high-school-career, Tartt focused his efforts on basketball and was named to the Mobile Press Register’s All-Academic basketball team before discovering football. At Samford, he started as free safety his sophomore to senior years and recorded a total of 277 tackles and 6 interceptions.

In 2010, he “redshirted,” and focused on improving his abilities. In 2011, he played in 10 games, amassing 23 tackles and 20 solo stops. In 2012, playing the position of free safety, he was named first team All-SoCon and second team All-American. In 2013, he started in every game and was named first-team All-Conference in addition to first-team All-American. He was also a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, an accolade awarded annually to the defensive player who displays superlative and unmatched performance on the field.

Tartt was Stamford’s first player chosen to play in the Senior Bowl, a post-season all-star game played by NFL Draft prospects; the athletes at the vanguard of college football. In the 2015 NFL Draft, Tartt was 46th pick overall and will play with the 49ers.

A student at the University of Virginia (UVA), linebacker Eli Harold attended Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he oscillated between the positions of defensive end, quarterback, running back and wide receiver.

While playing with the Ocean Lakes Dolphins, Sports Illustrated awarded him honorable mention All-American, he was named a first-team All-Tidewater pick, named Beach District Defensive Player of the Year and named to the first-team All-District selection. Additionally, in 2012, he was chosen to play in and captain a team in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. During this time, he also won several awards running track for the Dolphins.

ESPN and Rivals.com both listed Harold as a four-star recruit and Scout.com as a five-star recruit and No.1 OL prospect in the nation. He held the ranks of No. 1, No. 5 and No. 50 as overall player in Virginia, overall defensive end nationwide and overall Rivals prospect respectively. ESPN ranked him as 15th defensive end nationwide and assigned him a scouts grade of 80 points.

At UVA, he was named Touchdown Club of Richmond’s Defensive Lineman of the Year, All-ACC second-team, All ACC-Coaches second-team, Phil Steele preseason third team All-ACC and Athlon Sports preseason second-team All-ACC, among several other distinctions.

In December of 2014, Harold announced his decision to forgo his senior season at UVA, instead opting to enter the 2015 NFL Draft, in which he was chosen by in the third round by the 49ers. After his three seasons at UVA, two of which he was a starter, he holds 141 tackles, 17.5 sacks and two interceptions.
