Spirit rally concludes Spirit Week
April 22, 2016
Freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors congregated on Davis Field today for the annual Spirit Rally hosted by the Spirit Club. The rally concluded the series of Spirit Week events and activities held earlier in the week, including daily dress-up themes and class competitions.
Despite the pouring rain and cold weather, the rally continued as students huddled beneath umbrellas and used plastic bags to stay as dry as possible.
“The rally will take place tomorrow, rain or shine (unless accompanied by lightning, wind, or heavy precipitation),” Kerry Enzensperger, director of upper school community service and the student activities coordinator, said in an email sent out to the student body yesterday night. “If the rally is called off, it will not be rescheduled, so let’s hope for the best. You might want to bring a poncho or rain jacket just in case. The show must go on!”
The rally began with the seniors charging onto Davis Field followed by the freshman dancing with their class to their country theme.
“I think that it was a really fun experience actually because I’ve never danced in the rain before,” Sonal Muthal (9) said. “I also think that the whole environment was really cool because everyone was really supportive even though the rain conditions were kind of going against us since it’s hard to dance in the rain. Everyone’s spirit kind of really motivated us.”
Next, the sophomores performed their class dance choreographed to fit their mountain theme. The dance ended with all of the sophomores rushing towards the center of the field and sitting down around class dean Victor Adler waving the class flag.
“We put in a lot of work practicing [the dance] but then it kind of fell apart in the rain because we couldn’t hear any of the music and it was just really wet. But overall, it was still pretty fun, and I had a good time,” Megan Huynh (10) said.
Though some students thought the rain interfered with the performances, Jenna Sanders (10) was motivated by the weather conditions.
“Personally, [the rain] made me a lot more spirited because I felt that I had to make up for the loss of spirit from the rest of the grade,” she said.
Following the underclassmen dances was the scream-off and the junior class dance with their beach theme. The juniors came in first place with the highest decibelmeter score. The whole class participated in a dance break during their class dance performance.
“I was expecting [the turf] to be really slippery, but it wasn’t. I was actually really surprised that a lot of the juniors actually came out when we screamed at them to do so, which was good cause last everybody kind of sat there and didn’t move. People were really supportive,” Lavinia Ding (11) said.
Next, the JV dance team performed to the song “Flawless” by Beyonce followed by the senior class dance with the theme of big city. In addition to the seniors, advisors participated in the choreography as well.
“It was the most spirited I’ve ever seen my class come together,” Kevin Ke (12) said. “I think [the rain] made the event more dramatic.”
After the rally, sophomores gathered in the gym for an Eagle Buddies event with the third graders while the freshmen, juniors and seniors headed to lunch.
