The girls’ softball team made history Tuesday, beating Alma Heights High 6-0 when pitcher Alison Rugar (11) pitched a perfect game.

A first in Upper School history, a perfect game is the term used when a team prevents their opponent from ever getting on base. Alison faced 21 batters, all of which were called out before they reached first base with 18 strikeouts and 3 additional defensive plays made by other members of the team. On top of that, she hit a homerun and had 2 RBI’s.

“Lead off with a home run and finish with 21 outs in a row–that’s as good as it gets,” said Coach Dan Hudkins.

Throwing a perfect game is not only a school first, but also a personal best for Ali. Her stellar achievements in the game made it one for the records, and Coach Raul Rios said that it will be a challenge to top.

“It’s an accomplishment, but I’m not the only one who made it a perfect game.” Ali said. “Ashley [Del Alto] (11) made some very key plays, she caught some really difficult line drives, and we can’t have a perfect game without a catcher, and Laura [Thacker] (10) did very well behind the plate.”

Although excited about her performance in the game, Ali shared the credit with her teammates.

“She didn’t come out jumping around and looking for glory, she came out and actually high-fived all of her teammates for helping her get the victory, and she’s very humble about everything” said Rios.

The girls are 4-3 overall, and have gone 1-1 in league games. They look forward to facing opponents from Mercy High and King’s Academy in the coming week.
