The varsity boys’ baseball team defeated North Valley Baptist 11-2 at a seven-inning home game this afternoon at the Blackford campus.

This game was the team’s second this year, and is not a part of the league record. Head Coach Mike Delfino spoke about the team’s level of playing.

“We played well,” he said. “We came out with it flat, but they picked up their tempo really well, and I was proud. It’s good, with a league play starting on Thursday to get a game like this and play well and get in the league, so I thought they did a good job.”

The team also won their first game against Livermore Valley Charter Prep 16-3, bringing their overall record to 2-0.

Delfino commented on areas in which the team could improve in the future.

“I think just a lot of little things; improving communication, having our energy all of the time and making the basic plays more often, but they’re off to a good start and they’re working really hard,” he said.

According to Delfino, key players in the game were Nate Kelly (10) and Dominic Cea (10).

“I think Nate Kelly did a good job; he struggled a little bit early, but he really battled and battled and battled, and then Dominic came in and pitched a real nice game and for two innings he closed the door on them, and I was happy with their efforts,” he said.

Nate’s mother, Veronica Kelly, who watched the game, spoke about how the team could work to improve.

“Today’s game was a good game, it was [one] that they did better at compared to the last game,” she said. “I think right now they’re headed [on] the right track; I think just by practicing and knowing their positions and knowing what their role is individually so that they can get to the team.”

The eagles will play their first league game at Crystal Springs Uplands at 3:30 p.m. this Thursday.
