School meeting recap 4/13

National Economic Challenge coaches Samuel Lepler and Damon Halback announced results for the three Upper School teams that participated in this contest. Teams “Hurrikeynes,” “Anika Swag Money,” and “Go Eagles” are three out of five teams in Northern California that qualified for the championships, and Team Hurrikeynes will have the opportunity to participate in the national competition in New York City.

Anika Mohindra (11), on behalf of WiSTEM, expressed her gratitude towards the students, kitchen staff, science teachers, volunteers and attendees for a successful Harker Research Symposium this past Saturday.

After attending a nuclear disarmament council in Hiroshima with Alex Sikand (11), Ethan Ma (12) urged the the community to sign a petition for nuclear disarmament during lunch periods. Ethan also encouraged students and faculty to show their support for Upper School Nurse Clare Elchert, who has been diagnosed with cancer. According to the Japanese tradition, origami paper cranes will be available during lunch periods for people to express their support for Elchert.

Mark Janda, Pilar Aguero-Esparza, and Dr. Lola Muldrew from the Diversity Committee announced an open meeting to discuss several topics, including sexual orientation and racial differences, in hopes of educating the the community about diversity. This meeting will take place on Wednesday during long lunch in Dr. Muldrew’s room, Dobbins 101. At that time, they will also give information about the possibility for two students to attend a head Diversity conference in Florida.

Aguero-Esparza and Dr. Muldrew also elucidated the rules for the new Dress Code with clarifications on the wearing of leggings, plain T-shirts and collegiate sweatshirts. They also explained the “fingertip” stipulation.

Key Club announced its project to spread awareness for Tetanus, a disease that affects mothers and newborn children. To raise money for the cause, Key Club will sell Tpumps on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday after school and ice cream sandwiches and baked goods during lunch.

Sahiti Avula (11), representing the Make-a-Wish Foundation, announced that there will be another toy donation drive for underprivileged children that cannot afford a birthday party.

Rishabh Chandra (11) announced the Harker Conservatory’s musical production, “Into the Woods,” which will take place at 7 p.m. on April 16, 17 and 18. Tickets will be on sale during lunch.

Spirit Week themes were announced: Monday is Pajama Day, Tuesday is Tie-Dye Day, Wednesday is “Would you be my friend?” Day, Thursday is Class Choice Day, and Friday is Class Colors Day.
