League games come to an end: Tournaments up next for Water Polo

The boys’ Varsity water polo team has a record of 9-8, and the girls’ water polo team has a record of 5-10.

The girls’ water polo team won their last league game against Santa Clara High School on Senior Night, October 26, with a score of 10-9. On October 21 they lost against Lynbrook High School with the score 3-9.

However, they had two wins against Cupertino High School on October 20 and Mountain View High School on October 14 with scores 12-2 and 10-4, respectively. They lost against Wilcox High School on October 12 with the score 3-14.

On October 7, the team defeated Fremont High School with the score 8-7.

“[Winning that game] just felt so good afterwards,” co-captain Priya Sahdev (12) said. “The boys that day […] had barely won, [and] we had barely won; it was just perfect!”

The team faced a defeat of 3-10 against Santa Clara High School on September 30 and lost to Lynbrook High School on September 29 with a score of 6-12.

“People are definitely getting a lot more confident as the season goes on,” Coach Fana Fuqua said. “It definitely shows that they are becoming more and more comfortable with water polo.”

The boys’ Varsity water polo team won its Senior Night game against Santa Clara High School, also on October 26, with the score 10-7. The team lost against Lynbrook High School on October 21, Saratoga High School on October 14, and Wilcox High School on October 12 the scores of 8-11, 7-11, and 9-18, respectively.

Despite these losses, the team defeated Cupertino High School on October 20, Fremont High School on October 7 in triple overtime, and Santa Clara High School on September 30 with scores of 13-6, 12-11, and 10-3, respectively.

The coach of the boys’ Varsity team, Ted Ujifusa, is satisfied with the team this season.

“We simply just try to get better at every game, and I felt that we did that,” he said. “We really got better, and that’s all that you can hope for as an instructor.”
The boys’ and girls’ teams both have tournaments coming up. The boys have the Homestead High School Mustang Oktoberfest Varsity Tournament while the girls have the Halloween Classic on October 29 and 30.
