Green Team hosted multiple activities and sold baked goods in front of Manzanita throughout their club week this week in support of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a Kenyan animal orphanage.

“We’re selling a variety of sweets like brownies and cookies and banana bread,” Green Team officer Satchi Thockchom (11) said. “All the proceeds will go to an organization called David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, an animal orphanage in Kenya. The money will go towards building shelters and getting them clean water and food.”

On Monday, the school held the second Meatless Monday of the school year. There was no meat served at lunch, other than the deli meats.

“It’s really good practice to be aware of our environment and what we can do to help it,” Green Team member Katrina Liou (10) said. “I think Meatless Monday is a great way to help preserve our environment. Green Team teaches you a lot about what Meatless Mondays can do for you, including saving water.”

Tuesday’s main event was a movie screening of “Merchants of Doubt” during lunch. The documentary showed how scientists’ misinformation and propaganda could negatively affect climate change.

Wednesday’s lunch was designated to writing postcards to legislators about issues such as environmental protection.

“The reason it’s kind of important right now is that we have a president who has made some statements such as he wants to withdraw the United States from the climate accords that were signed last year in Paris,” advisor Diana Moss said. “He has talked about rolling back some of the Environmental Protection Agency responsibilities, and so we just need to keep moving things forward.”

Green Team’s club week was the last one of the school year. Some of their members are attending the Science March tomorrow at San Jose City Hall.
