The varsity girls’ volleyball team lost its season opener in a home game against Homestead High School at Blackford last night.

They lost three out of five sets, but had many students cheering them on in the stands.

Isabella Spradlin (11) reflected on her experience of how the girls prepared for this game.

“I was nervous to play in this first game because Homestead has a reputation for being pretty good,” Isabella said. “We’ve been practicing like crazy and after the first match, I wasn’t nervous at all because our communication during the game was solid. Communication is definitely the most important part of a game.”

The Eagles started the game off on a strong foot by winning the first and second set 25-21 and 25-22.  Homestead struck back in the last three sets, defeating Harker 23-25, 18-25 and 13-15.

Many students came to support the girls as their season commenced. They stood up and cheered when a point was scored and chanted, “I believe that we will win!” all throughout the game.

Junior spirit coordinator Amitej Mehta commented on the student turnout from tonight’s game.

“It’s a tradition that [students] come to the first game of any sports team at Harker,” Amitej said. “We make a lot of noise, cheer on our peers and make sure that they feel supported during the game. It’s always a lot of fun. The first game of the season, senior night and the last game of the season are always packed with kids from all grades, and I think it brings [the classes] all together.”

The girls will compete against other Bay Area teams at the Milpitas Spikefest this Saturday at Milpitas High School.
